Captain Neil Brodie an experienced master mariner in the 'blackbirding trade' (South Sea Islands Labour Trafficking ) and bĂȘche-de-mer trade had charge of the 119 ton schooner "Lavinia." in 1872. While engaged in recruiting on the coast of New Ireland she was attacked by natives and four of the crew were murdered.
