The colony quiet and prosperous except for the squabbles of lawyers - refers to cases of Gilbert Robertson v. Thomas Mcdonald and Abbot, when Mr. Anstey was roughly handled by the
Attorney General - verdicts farthing in one case and for the defendants in the other. Mr. Jones directed to supervise criminal proceedings at quarter sessions but declined so the Executive Council had been summoned. Mr. Anstey also 'carrying on a correspondence with the Gov. respecting his office' and so Mr. Sorell appointed his successor. Sir John also refers to his proposed visit to Port Arthur, Mr. Henslowe to come in mid-January, Parker's lameness, Government House plans not yet drawn, gardener arrived, Archdeacon Jefferies.

Papers of the executors of Rev. Archibald Macarthur a Presbyterian minister who returned to England in 1836 leaving his affairs and three of his children, Mary, Henry William and John, in the care of trustees and guardians, namely John Walker, Henry Hopkins and John Geiss. The eldest son, Archibald, accompanied him to England where he apparently died before his father, who died in January 1847. Macarthur's will, made in 1836, left his property to be divided between his surviving children on reaching the age of 21. The guardians were named as executors and trustees. Collection consists of legal papers including appointment of trustees, will & property trusts also included are some miscellaneous papers of John Walker of John Walker & Son, Barrack Street, Hobart, manufacturers of fine flour.

Accounts and bills, mainly for household and family expenses and a few pharmaceutical supplies; including food, meat, ale wine, crockery, clothing, house repairs, saddlery, repairs to gig, garden plants and seeds, newspapers, rent of premises in Liverpool Street from William Beechcroft at £75 pa., Hobart Town High School fees and fees for tuition of 'Master John' in English, Latin and violin by S.P. Daly. Tradesmen’s bills include: W. Carter of Buckingham House, Murray St., Richard Cleburn, chandler and grocer; William Elliot for wine and sherry; Daniel Graham, grocer, Liverpool Street; W. The correspondence consists of letters addressed to James Backhouse and his companion relating to their missionary journey. Most are from people in official positions thanking the missionaries for their work, acknowledging books and reports, replying to requests for information or offering introductions, help and hospitality and also some discussion of religious matters and references to botany in which James Backhouse was interested.
